Three teachers tell us why they love their jobs

A Claudia

My mum and dad were teachers so it’s not surprising that I became one. I saw how happy they were in their jobs and I always thought teaching was a possibility for me. But I didn’t think it would be such hard work. During term time there is absolutely no time for any personal evening activities in the week. Luckily, we get good holidays and I love travelling when I get the chance.

B Polly

I did a teacher training course in college and now I work in a school with children aged four to eleven. I love seeing them growing up in front of my eyes! I teach kids in their first year at school. At the beginning of the year they are usually shy and quiet, but I do everything I can to make them feel relaxed and happy. If they aren’t happy and relaxed, they aren’t going to learn. I’m glad tests aren’t important for my pupils.

C Stan

I teach history to children over the age of sixteen. Most of them work very hard because they want to get good marks and get into the university of their choice. I love discussing things with them and helping them understand the links between what has happened in the past and things that are happening now. I never thought I would be a teacher – I only turned to it when I was looking for a job after university – and I love it!

Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

School counts the cost of storm

When children and parents arrived at school in the small village of Brownston yesterday morning, they were surprised to see the head teacher standing outside the front of the school. The school gates were closed, because a tree had fallen onto the roof of the school hall and a number of windows were broken. A storm the night before had made school buildings unsafe, so the children were sent home until further notice.

Justine Cram, a mother with two young children at the school, said that she was unhappy with the way the head teacher sent the children home. ‘I have to cancel all my work appointments today. My customers won’t be pleased, but I have to stay at home to look after my daughters,’ she said. ‘Children should be in school every day! The head teacher needs to think again about closing. He should find a safe place to teach the children until they can use the buildings again.’

Richard Thomas, the head teacher, explained that he had no choice but to send the children home. “The storm happened in the early hours of Monday morning, just a few hours before school starts. When I arrived, I immediately decided it was not a safe place for children to be in. I know parents are unhappy that the school is closed, but if their children or members of staff were hurt because of the problems, that would be worse.’

Mr Thomas hopes to open the school again by Thursday.
