1   What will the man do on Sunday?

Woman:   I’ve just been for a beautiful walk by the river.

Man:   I’m going to go there on my bike on Sunday. There are always lots of people fishing on Saturday and Sunday.

Woman:   Really? I like the boats. I’d like to go on a boat on the river.

Man:   I prefer to be near the river, not on it!

2   Where is Jenny’s school bag?

Mum:   Are you looking for your school bag, Jenny? It was in the car when we drove home.

Jenny:   I took it out of the car and up to my bedroom… then I needed it for my homework.

Mum:   Well, you did your homework in the dining room. Have you looked in there?

Jenny:   Oh yeah, there it is, on the back of the chair.

3   What will they eat at the dinner party tonight?

Man:   It’s getting very late. They’ll be here soon. Shall I make a salad?

Woman:   Good idea. The main course is cooking, but I haven’t got time to make soup.

Man:   That’s a pity. What about the cakes we bought?

Woman:   Let’s put them in the fridge. We can have those tomorrow.

4   Where will the friends meet?

Man:   You’re coming by bus so shall I meet you at the bus stop?

Woman:   You don’t have to do that. I’ll walk into town and see you at 7.00 outside the cinema.

Man:   Actually, I’m having coffee with Rachel then, at the new café on the High Street. Why don’t you come there?

Woman:   OK! We can all go and see the film afterwards.

5   What did the boy do last night?

Girl:   Did you spend all evening doing your homework? I did. It was so difficult!

Boy:   My class didn’t get any homework last night!

Girl:   So you spent all night watching TV. Wow, you’re lucky!

Boy:   Not very lucky… only one programme was interesting. It was about computer games from Japan. It was really good!

Teacher:   Everyone? Please listen. I want to tell you about our trip next week. Every year, we visit a museum. Last year, we went to a history museum, but this year it’s the Science Museum in London. There’s an exhibition on at the moment that I want you to see. It’s about space and I know many of you would be very interested in it.

We’re going next Thursday, so please ask your parents to fill in the travel form and return it to me on Monday, at the latest. Then I can go and get the travel tickets. The school bus isn’t big enough, so we’re going by train.

Now it’s free to get into the museum so you just have to pay £5 for travel and a bit more for food. That’s £7.50 in total. We’re going to have lunch in the museum restaurant so you don’t need to bring sandwiches. But we need to walk to the museum from the station so remember to bring your raincoat because it may be a wet day.

Holly:   I’m so excited! HT Morgan’s new book is in the shops next week!

Brad:   Really? I’ve just read an old book of hers, Wild Wood. It was great.

Holly:   Yes, the new one, The Hungry Hills, sounds really good. I think it’s going to be even better than Night Fog!

Brad:   Which day will people be able to buy it?

Holly:   I was reading about it in the newspaper on Saturday. The shops will have it on Tuesday. So I’ll buy it on Friday when I go shopping.

Brad:   Books are so expensive, Holly… the last one I bought cost £8!

Holly:   Most good books cost more than £10, I think, but you can get this for only nine at City Books. There’s a special discount.

Brad:   Where is City Books?

Holly:   It’s just behind West Street. If you go there by bus, get off at the corner of High Street and turn left into Great Street. It’s down there on the right.

Brad:   Thanks. I’ll write that down.

Holly:   Oh, and you get a free present with every book. I saw it on a poster in the shop.

Brad:   What? Like a pen? That’s not very useful.

Holly:   No, it’s a CD of the music the writer listened to when she wrote the book! It looks colourful on the poster, but it’s just a silver CD.

Brad:   What a good idea!

Boy:   You missed a great chemistry lesson yesterday. Where were you?

Girl:   I had to go to the dentist. I had really bad toothache.

Boy:   Oh – poor you! Are you OK now?

Girl:   Yes, I am, thanks.

Boy:   We did this amazing experiment. I can show you my notes.

Girl:   That’s great, can I borrow them tonight?

17   You will hear a teacher talking to her class. What should the students remember to do in their exam today?

Woman:   Now, today is your first exam of the year in English. It’s important to remember to check your spelling and grammar when you answer the questions because you’ll lose marks if there are mistakes in these. It’s not a test of your thoughts and ideas. That will be important tomorrow when you have to write a story for your second English exam.

18   You will hear a boy and girl talking. Where has Bella’s brother been?

Girl:   Oh, there you are John.

Boy:   I’ve just got in. I went to the fair in the city after school finished. It was amazing.

Girl:   I’d like to go there, can we go tomorrow?

Boy:   sorry, Bella, I can’t go with you. I’m playing football in the park after school tomorrow.

Girl:   I’ll ask Claire if she can go with me after her tennis lesson.

Boy:   That’s a good idea.

19   You will hear a boy and his mother talking. What does Dan’s mum want him to do?

Mum:   Dan, can you help me with my car? It’s really dirty and it could do with a wash.

Boy:   OK, Mum. Shall I wash it on the road or in the garage?

Mum:   Can you wash it on the road? I need it by six o’clock as I’m going to the sports centre then.

Boy:   OK. Will you pay me like last time? You gave me £5.

Mum:   OK.

20   You will hear a girl talking to her father. Where will the girl meet her friend?

Girl:   Dad, can you give me a lift later? I’m meeting Sam at the cinema.

Dad:   I’ve got to go to the sports centre to pick up your brother. Is it on the way?

Girl:   Not really, but you could drop me at the train station by the shopping centre.

Dad:   OK, I’ll do that.

Girl:   I’ll tell Sam to meet me there.

Fred:   Well, this is from Helen. I love all the chickens. They look really funny, don’t they?!

Mum:   Yes! And who sent you this one?

Fred:   A friend called Evan. He went on a walking holiday. Look how high it is! You can even see snow on the top!

Mum:   Oh yes! And I’m guessing that Jasmine sent you this one from the zoo!

Fred:   That’s right! I asked her for a postcard of some fish, but she sent this one of a tiger instead. It’s a pity that it’s asleep! It doesn’t look very wild!

Mum:   And this one’s from Billy, is it?

Fred:   Yes, he loves castles. The one on this postcard is on the top of a hill and Billy said there’s a great beach on the other side.

Mum:   And who’s this one from?

Fred:   It’s from Julia. She went flying in this, but it was really small. She said there were only 12 other passengers!
